European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Birmingham Airport, the international airport located near Birmingham, England, has announced that it will start a redundancy programme, cutting up to 250 jobs, in response to the sharp decline in demand for air travel in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Consultation with the affected workers is already underway.
The chief executive of the airport said the loss of income had become unsustainable and it was now necessary to 'consider resizing and restructuring the business'.
An officer the trade union Unite said the redundancy programme was “premature” and called on the government to protect jobs in the aviation sector.
Birmingham is the seventh busiest airport in the UK, offering flights to locations in Europe, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, North America, and the Caribbean. British regional airline Flybe operated an extensive route network from Birmingham until it went bankrupt in March 2020.
