European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
UPM, a Finnish producer of plywood and other wood products, has closed down its production site in Jyväskylä at the end of July 2020, causing 147 redundancies. According to UPM, the company has not been able to make the production of plywood profitable despite its efforts. The closure is expected to result in annual savings of approximately €11 million for the company.
UPM plans to relocate some of the birch plywood production to Russia where the production costs are lower and it will also relocate activity to Estonia and elsewhere in Finland. According to the management, Finnish working conditions and frequent industrial action have had a negative impact on the profitability and competitiveness of the company.
The shop steward criticises the decision of the company to close the mill as unfair, but also welcomes the company’s efforts to support the employees in finding new employment.
