European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), the UK-based international theatre organisation has announced that it is making 1,200 casual and zero-hours jobs redundant at its theatres across the UK in September, when the conditions of the UK government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme change. After this date, participating employers have to contribute to the cost of the Scheme.
A spokesperson for ATG said there was no alternative to the redundancies, because it was still unclear when theatres could reopen and start raising revenue again.
The trade union Bectu shares the opinion that theatres cannot afford to pay their staff in the current circumstances and warned that ATG’s decision could start a trend of mass redundancies in the theatre sector.
The Ambassador Theatre Group is one of the most important employers in British theatre, running the Liverpool Empire, King’s Theatre Glasgow and several theatres in London’s West End. ATG also operates theatres in Germany, Australia and the United States.
