European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Tesco, the British supermarket chain has announced that it will create 16,000 permanent positions across the UK, in response to the increased demand for online grocery shopping in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The new positions include 10,000 permanent ‘pickers’, who collect customers’ online orders, 3,000 drivers who deliver these orders and other roles in stores and distribution centres . The new jobs will be first offered to staff working on temporary contracts, who had joined the company since the start of the pandemic, and the remaining vacancies will be advertised externally.
The chief executive officer of Tesco UK and Republic of Ireland said the new roles will enable the company to 'continue to meet online demand for the long term'.
Tesco is the UK’s largest supermarket chain by market share. According to a statement by the company, online sales accounted for 16% of its total sales, compared to 9% before the pandemic.
