Description
Amazon, the US-based tech and online retail company has announced plans to open a new ’fulfilment centre’ in Sutton-in-Ashfield, in the East Midlands region, creating 1,000 new permanent jobs. Recruitment for operations managers, engineers, HR, IT and finance professionals to health and safety specialists has already started.
Amazon said it 'invested heavily' in creating a high tech and safe working environment for its employees - the site will have state-of-the-art Amazon robotics technology, which is able to pick items and move them through the centre.
Amazon now has 23 fulfilment centres in the UK and the new centre will be its fourth centre in the East Midlands. The company has faced criticism in the past from unions over health and safety concerns and the way it treats staff.
Update 8/10/2020
Amazon has opened its second fulfilment centre in the north east of England near Durham, creating 1,000 permanent jobs. The new Amazon site is one of the UK’s largest logistics buildings. The company has also announced that it is creating 7,000 new jobs by the end of 2020, taking the size of its total UK workforce to 40,000.
