European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Bangor University, situated in North Wales, has announced restructuring plans putting 200 jobs at risk of redundancy: 120 support and 80 academic positions. The aim of the restructure is to save £13 million (€14.5 million as at 26 October 2020) in response to a reduction of the University’s income, caused primarily by a fall in the number of applications from international students in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trade Unions Unison, UCU and Unite have criticised the proposal. Unison argued that it was too early to predict how many students will enrol for the next academic year, while UCU said it was 'short-sighted' to make staff redundant when their expertise is needed to deliver teaching under difficult circumstances caused by the pandemic.
Bangor University was founded in 1884 and it is famous for its research and teaching in natural sciences. The University currently has 10,000 students, a quarter of whom are international students, from 120 countries.
