Description
The Swedish pulp and paper manufacturer Billerud has announced that it will have to reduce their workforce by 350 workers globally. These layoffs will primarily affect papermills in Frövi (Örebro), Kalix (Norrbotten), Grums (Värmland), Gävle (Gävleborg), Skärblacka (Östergötland). An estimated 238 workers will be let go in Sweden. Layoffs will also affect the papermill in Pietarsaari, Finland. According to Billerud, this is to increase efficiency and increase market competitivity.
Billerud currently employees around 2,000 people in Sweden, and 6,000 globally.
According to local union representatives at both the mill in Frövi and Kalix, it is unclear if the layoffs will primarily affect millworkers or corporate workers. They are, however, worried since this is the third restructuring in the past three years. Cooperation negotiations will start in the shift between October and November.
