Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The new local government of Tallinn announced on the 15th of April that they will close down a department of the Strategy Centre (Strateegiakeskus), which operates under the name of City Media (Linnameedia), by the end of May. All of its 39 of its employees will be dismissed.
This department is currently responsible for the publishing of two newspapers (Pealinn and Stolista) and production of Tallinn city TV programme.
The decision for the closure was one of the first promises the new local government wanted to carry out, as the City Media has been very politicised and used as a mouth piece for the previous government and a single party (the Centre Party) in Estonia. With this closure the new local government also wishes to save a lot of resources for urban development in the coming years.
Update On the 1st of October 2025, the local government of Tallinn announced additional redundancies in the Strategy Centre (Strateegiakeskus) due to further restructuring affecting 15 people.
In addition, the Tallinn Sports Centre, also a department operated by the local government laid off 20 people due to restructuring. As mentioned above, these restructurings are carried out due to the change of coalition in the city.
