Description

As part of the restructuring of its Carbon Fibers business unit, SGL Carbon has decided to close its production site - SGL Composites - in Lavradio, located in Barreiro. SGL Composites in Lavradio is one of seven sites in the Carbon Fibers business unit and currently employs around 250 people.

According to the company, the decision has been driven primarily by higher production costs in Europe compared to Asia, particularly in relation to energy, which has made Lavradio’s products especially vulnerable to global competition and falling fibre prices.

The closure of the Lavradio site will be executed in multiple phases and, according to SGL Carbon, will be conducted in close consultation with all relevant stakeholders. The company has stated that it will comply with all existing contractual commitments and legal obligations.

In the first moment, the production will be closed in June 2025, with the dismissal of 190 workers. Final activities to complete the closure of the site will be fully implemented by the end of 2026, with the remaining 60 workers being made redundant.
