The Ovar plant of Japanese multinational Yazaki Saltano, one of the main suppliers of electrical and electronic systems for the automotive industry, has dismissed 364 workers.
Consultation with the workers' representatives and trade unions has already begun.
The redundancies are justified by the worsening crisis in the automotive market, in particular with the recent closure of companies in Germany to which the Ovar factory had been supplying products.
The Left Bloc party (Partido Bloco de Esquerda - BE) will demand answers from the Government, considering it ‘unacceptable that a company the size of Yazaki Saltano has not found an alternative to ensure job retention, especially considering the astronomical profits the company enjoys on an international scale."
According to BE it is necessary to "understand what answers the government has" for the workers who have been left without work, considering that it is essential for the government to "present concrete measures to support these workers, ensuring social protection and immediate access to new job opportunities".
Yazaki, however, assures that all legal procedures are being followed, and a Support Office has been set up to assist all affected workers, with a particular focus on redeployment. Yazaki, also states that this restructuring process is a necessary measure to increase ‘competitiveness and meet the conditions to win projects with greater added value and greater technological integration’. The company denies any intention to relocate production.
