The french carmaker Renault has announced the progressive elimination of the night shift at its Valladolid assembly plant, a decision affecting approximately 300 workers. The measure, scheduled to begin on 24 March, was communicated to union representatives on 4 February. According to Union representatives, the decision stems from growing uncertainty in the automotive sector, driven by EU regulations mandating the gradual phase-out of combustion engines by 2035—with intermediary targets for 2025 and 2030—as well as potential tariffs threatened by the United States.
The Union also notes that while the plant reached full capacity with three shifts following the 2024 summer break, this momentum has since faltered. The night shift had been vital for many employees seeking work-life balance, and its removal requires a comprehensive restructuring of the workforce.

Renault has announced the reinstatement of the night shift at its Valladolid plant from August, just five months after it was suppressed due to market uncertainty. The reversal will see over 300 employees rehired to meet a projected 15% increase in production, driven by renewed demand for the Captur and the rollout of the new Symbioz model. This shift marks a significant change in outlook for the French manufacturer, which had attributed the March decision to falling sales and sector instability. Trade unions have cautiously welcomed the move, and now call for a transparent and fair rehiring process, particularly for those previously displaced or relocated.
