Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

Vanpro, a manufacturer of seats for the automotive sector, will close at the beginning of next year and is already preparing the collective dismissal of its workforce.
The reason given for the closure is the loss of its contract with Autoeuropa — the company’s sole client for nearly 30 years. Autoeuropa has selected a different supplier for the new model to be produced at its Palmela factory.
According to the coordinator of Vanpro’s workers’ committee, 125 of the 475 employees facing redundancy will be relocated to another company within the Palmela industrial park. The workers’ committee is actively working to find solutions for the remaining 350 employees who are at risk of unemployment. "The situation is particularly concerning for couples in which both partners worked at Vanpro".
The dismissed workers will receive 1.2 months' salary for each year of service — above the legal requirement — as well as an attendance bonus.
