Description

Carrefour has announced 175 job cuts at its Milan headquarters as part of a strategic reorganization plan, marking another step in its potential Italian market exit. The French multinational cited complex Italian market conditions characterized by intense competition, diminished purchasing power, and margin pressures from rising energy, logistics costs, and interest rates.

Carrefour stated the restructuring aims to accelerate business transformation focused on the franchising model and relaunch financial and commercial sustainability. The company prioritised managing affected personnel in compliance with regulations and finding solutions with minimal social impact through constructive dialogue with social partners.

Update, 15/10/2025:

Carrefour Italia has revoked dismissal procedures for 175 employees at its Milan headquarters. The company is in the process to sell 1,500 shops to the french group New Princes Group. According to CISL (trade union), the decision relates to "prospects of ownership transfer" substantially modifying the original reorganization plan.

Trade unions Filcams CGIL, Fisascat CISL, and Uiltucs UIL welcomed the dismissal suspension while emphasizing need for vigilance regarding future employment structure and worker guarantees following sale completion. Organizations demand a permanent negotiating table with new ownership.
