Description

Valmet automotive, a Finnish vehicle manufacturing company, has announced a large scale restructuring on its site in Uusikaupunki, Finland. The cooperation negotiations comprise all 1,300 employees that the company has in Finland. The company estimates that reduction will add up to a maximum of 1,075 person years, and will be comprised of direct dismissals, temporary lay-offs, and changes in job descriptions.

The Minister of Labour has planned a visit to the site in the week following the announcement, with the purpose of mitigating the impact of the restructuring in collaboration with Valmet automotive’s representatives.

The restructuring is due to reduced market demand, and Valmet automotive has undergone repeated restructuring in recent years. In Valmet automotive - 2023 -FI2023, the company cut 940 staff, half of which were temporary layoffs. Now, manufacturing of Mercedes Bentz vehicles on the site will stop all together. Last year, the Finnish state acquired majority shares of the car manufacturing plant with the plan to reorient its activities to provide for the defence. However, this has yet to manifest to de facto production requiring labour.

Globally Valmet has in more than 19,000 employees including 1,300 workers in Finland.
