Description

NorgesGruppen, a Norwegian retail group, announced the closure of its Dollarstore discount chain, affecting 250 jobs across 26 stores and associated store operations nationwide in Norway. Closures will proceed gradually as leases vary. Around 150 full-time and part-time employees and 100 on-call temporary employees will be impacted.

The decision follows a prolonged fall in customer traffic and turnover, rising costs, and unsuccessful turnaround measures (store upgrades, assortment changes, and price adjustments);

NorgesGruppen has started a process to identify alternative jobs for affected staff and commits to an orderly wind-down with attention to employees, suppliers, and partners. Employee reactions reported by store management indicate concern and distress at the announcement.

NorgesGruppen acquired a 51% stake in Dollarstore in 2022 (founders retained 49%) and mentions that lessons from the venture will inform its future low-price offering.
