American company Celanese has announced its intention to close its acetate tow production facility in Lanaken, by the second half of 2026. The decision was communicated during a special works council meeting and will affect approximately 190 employees.
The closure is attributed to high energy costs in Belgium, which are reportedly three to four times higher than in other regions, declining global demand for cigarette filters due to stricter regulations, and aggressive competition from Chinese manufacturers offering dumping prices.
The site, which opened in 1964, reported a €5 million loss in 2024 on a turnover of €165 million. The company has committed to initiating the Renault procedure and negotiating a social plan with trade unions.
The closure marks another economic setback for Lanaken, following the earlier shutdown of the Sappi paper mill Sappi 2023 - BE.
