Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Belgian-Turkish recycling company Synpet is investing €300 million in a new recycling facility in the Port of Antwerp. The initiative is expected to create over 100 direct and indirect jobs.
The plant will convert mixed and currently non-recyclable plastic waste into a circular substitute for naphtha, which can be used by petrochemical companies in the region to produce new plastics. The technology, developed over more than a decade, is said to outperform existing methods such as pyrolysis and gasification, and can even process PVC.
CEO Cem Özsüer emphasises the environmental impact, stating that the technology offers a solution to plastic pollution by transforming waste into valuable raw materials. The project also benefits from EU regulations restricting the export of waste outside the Union, allowing Synpet to source plastic waste from across Europe.
