Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
As announced on first October 2025, the U.S. glass packaging manufacturer Owens-Illinois (O-I Glass) plans to close its plant in Bernsdorf (Saxony). Around 100 employees will be affected.
The company cites a strategic realignment aimed at securing the group’s long-term competitiveness as the reason, which are exacerbated by an increase in energy and production costs in Germany. It is still unclear when production will be completely shut down.
The IG BCE union intends to consult with the works council and the workforce on next steps. Production stopped back in August already, however, the formal closure and dismissal process are yet to be determined.
O-I Glass employs around 24,000 people worldwide, including about 800 in Germany.
