Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Penny chain of supermarkets, owned by the German Group Rewe, announced the creation of 200 new jobs by the end of 2025. The company officially inaugurated its new logistics center at Mihalesti (Giurgiu County) after a €35 million investment and the network's first center to operate entirely without gas heating.
The logistics center, with an area of over 22,000 square meters and a team of approximately 200 employees, currently serves about 50 stores in the south of the country, including Bucharest and Ilfov County, with the potential for expansion as the network grows, more specifically 70 stores by the end of 2026 and 100 stores by 2027.
Penny is one of the most active retailers in Romania, with the first store opened on the local market in 2005. The entire network is served by five logistics centers located in Stefanestii de Jos (Ilfov County), Turda (Cluj County), Bacau (Bacau County), Filiasi (Dolj County), and Mihailesti (Giurgiu County).
As of 2025, Penny Market operates 430 stores in Romania and employs 7,500 employees.
