Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
ArcelorMittal Poland, the country’s largest steel producer in the metallurgical sector, will permanently shut down production at the Huta Królewska plant in Chorzów, affecting 270 employees when installations are stopped in December 2025.
The closure results from high energy costs, insufficient market protections, EU ETS-related burdens, and the age of the installations, which would require major investments that the company sees as economically unjustified.
Job-reduction measures include redeployment to other ArcelorMittal sites or alternative support solutions for all affected workers.
Unions have been informed, and social consultations are underway, although previous attempts to save the plant, including investments and searching for a strategic investor, were unsuccessful.
ArcelorMittal Poland, employing over 9,000 people, operates several major steelworks and acquired Huta Królewska in 2007; the plant’s origins date back to the late 18th century.
