Description

PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna, has plans to cease the operation of its "Elektrownia Rybnik" coal-fired power plant, potentially causing the loss of around 360 to 400 jobs in Rybnik, Śląskie Voivodeship, Poland.

The restructuring is linked to plans by the operator to gradually shut down its coal-fired units, with two blocks scheduled to close in 2026 and the remaining two in 2027. This coincides with the company signing off on plans to build new highly-automated gas-fired power plants that are expected to require significantly less operational staff.

Hence, unions and workers fear large-scale redundancies once the coal units are fully decommissioned. Employees organised a protest led by the local Solidarność trade union, arguing that earlier agreements had guaranteed the plant’s operation until at least 2030 and expressing concern that the new gas facilities will employ only around 10 percent of the current workforce.

The parent company PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna is Poland’s largest electricity producer and is currently restructuring its generation portfolio, gradually replacing coal-based assets with lower-emission technologies such as gas and renewables.
