Description

Novartis, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, announced that it will close its plant in Wehr by the end of 2028 resulting in the loss of 220 jobs by the end of 2028.

The company states the decision was driven by a strategic shift toward advanced cell and gene therapy. It claims the plant was no longer profitable and future growth will focus on a new facility in Saxony-Anhalt.

Novartis stated that it wants to reduce the jobs in a responsible and socially fair way. The company has started negotiations with the works council.

In Germany, Novartis employs more than 2,600 people at currently six locations. The site has existed for over 80 years and is the second-largest employer in the city.
