Description
Valio, a Finnish dairy company, announced a plan to close down its Oulu plant, a key production site for fresh milk products, plant-based intermediates and ice cream. The closure is estimated to affect roughly 140 jobs, with the plant expected to be fully closed by summer 2028. The premises would still house the distribution warehouse and other company operations, such as sales and support functions. The company is planning to relocate production to Riihimäki, Jyväskylä and Joensuu, aiming to improve efficiency, profitability and competitiveness.
The move follows a decline in core dairy consumption and increased costs since the pandemic, prompting cost-saving measures across the group. 264 of the 300 employees working in production are under the cooperation negotiations, which will begin on May 25. Workers will be offered positions at other Valio sites where available.
