European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Staff at a North Staffordshire NHS trust have been told 1,000 jobs could be lost as managers try to reduce debts of 17 million GBP. It is thought three quarters of the redundancies at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke-on-Trent could be compulsory. An estimated 370 of the posts will be nurses and midwives. Vacant posts may not be filled to help reduce staffing and 15 consultant posts could be cut. The Department of Health said it was reassured services would not be cut.
On 16 March 2007, one year after the announced cut of 1,000 jobs it was announced that 800 jobs have been lost. It said only 40 compulsory losses had been made with other posts being lost through unfilled vacancies, natural wastage and voluntary redundancies.
A spokesman said the hospital needed to save 20 million GBP in the next financial year, but had not identified where 7 million GBP of these savings would be made. The hospital has closed 145 beds as part of its cost-cutting measures and has said more post closures are possible.
