Description
The Courts Service and Department for Constitutional Affairs has announced that 1,300 jobs will be cut in the organization.
Alex Allan, permanent secretary, sent staff a letter warning of expected cuts but said most of the job losses would come through 'normal turnover and tight controls on recruitment'.
The cuts come after the department failed to implement efficiency improvements, such as legal aid savings, required under its financial settlement with the Treasury.
However, the Public and Commercial Services union refused to rule out industrial action over the job losses. Mark Serwotka, union general secretary, said: 'For a government that puts so much store into law and order, it is remarkable that the DCA is making such big cuts in the justice system. The inevitable consequences of slashing jobs will be a growing backlog of cases and the grinding to a halt of the justice system in parts of the country.'
