European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
SAS Technical Services AB is the leading provider of aircraft maintenance in the Nordic region. It became a separate business unit within the SAS group in 2002 and was transformed into a an independently operating subsidiary in 2004. STS provides technical maintenance of aircraft to airlines in and outside the SAS Group. The company has approximately 2,500 employees and a turnaround of around 550 million Euros, while the SAS Group has about 32,000 employees. Production bases are located in Copenhagen, Oslo, Stavanger, Bergen, Gothenburg and Tallinn.
The board of STS decided on 12 June 2006 to focus its operations for aircraft maintenance around the three main airports in Scandinavia. The chairman of the Board said in a statement: "The market, which is characterized by global players and competitors from countries with low production costs, demands a lower level of prices. We are not able to lower our prices unless we reduce our cost levels." As a consequence of this, the production base at Sola near Stavanger will be closed as of effect on 31 August 2006. 265 employees at Sola will be affected.
The production at STS' base in Stavanger will now gradually be reduced, while at the same time a program for assisting the employees in finding new jobs, will be implemented. Each and all of the employees will receive salary the year out, and employees over 59-years of age are guaranteed continued employment in the SAS Group.
The employees have opposed the decision strongly, especially as this production base has made a solid economical surplus. The unions have mobilised local politicians, had meetings with the Minister of Trade and Industry and had a political strike. The unions suggested an alternative plan to the Board, which would keep the jobs at Sola. Still the Board made an unanimous decision, with the votes of employee representatives representing employees from other parts of the company.
