European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
In 2008, the Japanese car maker Nissan announced the reduction of 1,680 jobs at its plants in Montcada and Barcelona due to the sharp drop in car sales and the global economic slowdown. After protests, the company agreed to implement reduced working hours and temporary closures in place of the redundancies while negotiating with unions. While the company still insists that it has over 1,400 surplus workers, only 226 have opted for voluntary redundancy to date. Early retirement options are also being explored.
