Description
Eesti Energia Kaevandused, the subsidiary of the national energy company Eesti Energia Group, announced the reduction of 103 jobs during a three-month period at the end of November 2009. The main activities of Eesti Energia Kaevandused AS are in oil-shale mining.
According to the announcement, job reduction affects mostly workers in service and maintenance of mining equipment. The restructuring is part of a longer process of reducing fixed costs and raising the quality of work. The company has invested in the past years in new mining equipment. This has also reduced the need for maintenance. With the new equipment, the maintenance service will be provided by the manufacturing company of the equipment.
According to the collecitve agreement in the company, the trade union has been informed of the restructuring plans. According to the representative of the trade union, the need for restructuring is understandable. The trade union will work in cooperation with the employer to support redundant workers in finding new jobs. Furthermore, cooperation with the Unemployment Insurance Fund is planned, who will inform the persons who have received the redundancy notice about their rights and introduce possibilities for retraining.
In view of reducing fixed costs and increasing effectiveness, a restructuring programme has been undertaken in other subsidiaries of the Eesti Energia Group as well, though to a less extent. The Eesti Energia Narva Elektrijaamad announced the reduction of 80 jobs in units which are not related to its main activity, i.e. production and distribution of electricity (e.g. maintenance of real estate and other supporting services). The restructuring will affect about 5% of the employees in the subsidiary.
