European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Telecom Italia, the Italian leading telecommunications company, has announced a 2010-2012 reorganisation plan that envisages 3,900 job cuts by the end of 2012. Also the last two reorganisation plans, that the company announced in recent years, included job losses.
According to the company, the redundant workers could benefit from economic incentives for voluntary dismissals and other measures in order to avoid direct lay-offs. Telecom Italia has around 55,000 employees in Italy. The trade unions reacted to the company's decision announcing several protest actions.
On 4 August 2010, Telecom Italia, the trade unions and the Italian government have reached an agreement on the implementation of the job cuts envisaged by the last two reorganisation plans. The agreement provides for economic incentives for voluntary dismissals and the recourse to the "voluntary mobility" with a view to early retirement for 3,900 redundant workers. The workers could benefit of the measures in the period 2010-2012. Moreover, the agreement envisages the recourse to the "job-security agreements" and training courses with a view to outplace 2,200 employees within the company.
