European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
On 2 July 2012, Kraków Local Government announced plans to reduce employment in the local schools by 850 jobs (250 teachers and 600 other employees working in the education sector).
Like other local governments in Poland, Kraków gives two reasons for the employment reduction: the "baby bust" phenomenon and the general necessity for cuts in the public expenditure (local governments claims that the subsidies from the Ministry of National Education is not high enough).
The local trade unions say the number of reductions would be much greater if non-renewed temporary contracts were taken into account- according to unions these could account for 200 additional redundancies.
At the moment, Kraków Local Government employs 12,500 teachers and 5,400 other employees related to education.
