European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Mining company Talvivaara has announced the dismissal of 68 of its approximately 670 employees in Sotkamo. The company has concluded negotiations with employees' representatives on the job cuts.
Tavivaara operates a metal mine in Sotkamo. The company has been suffering from production problems, eg. leaks from its storage pools into surrounding waters. These have led to a slowing down in production and temporary lay-offs.
The company now seeks to save 5 million Euros annually; this implies making 68 people redundant. At the start of negotiations, Talvivaara had foreseen a total of 250 layoffs, permanent and temporary. The company is also not renewing 96 fixed-term positions, some of which were summer trainees.
