European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The BBC's director of news and current affairs has informed staff that "a significant number of redundancies" will be made. It is reported that his email to staff reminded them that the Delivering Quality First Scheme committed the corporation to making savings of "tens of millions of pounds".
It is understood that full details of the proposals will be unveiled next month, though Forbes is reporting that redundancies are expected to be between 550-600, including 500 from the news division.
Update, 24-04-2015: The BBC has announced that agreement has been reached to cut 176 positions. The announcement in July of 415 job cuts had led to strike threats by the NUJ and Bectu unions, followed by a temporary halt to compulsory redundancies. A further 41 senior management and overseas jobs will also be lost; these did not require consultation with the trade unions. 80 posts are currently in consultation or dispute. For 70 positions the plans are yet to be announced. The BBC also added that 21 jobs which were at risk had been saved from cuts due to changes in the plans or revised priorities. 29 individuals who had been at risk of redundancy have been successfully re-deployed elsewhere in the organisation.
Update, 17-07-2014: The News Department of the BBC has announced that it will abolish 415 jobs as part of the efficiency savings flagged in June 2014. BBC News currently employs around 8,400 workers, including 5,000 journalists who work in London, around the UK and abroad. The restructuring of the news division will also see the creation of 195 new jobs. This will mean an overall net loss of 220 full-time jobs. The internal restructuring will see BBC increase their focus on new media technologies such as online and mobile apps. Trade unions representing staff at the BBC, the NUJ and Bectu have commenced consultation with management. The trade unions have called for voluntary redundancies and have not ruled out industrial action in response to the job cuts. Industrial action has already been planned for 23 July in relation to an ongoing dispute around pay.
