European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Public broadcaster BBC has announced that its workforce will be reduced by more than 1,000 jobs. In a statement to staff, Director General of the BBC, Tony Hall told staff that senior management roles across all areas will be reduced from ten to a maximum of seven layers. In addition, professional and support areas such as marketing and communications, finance, human resources, IT support and the legal department will be restructured. Cuts will also be made in the BBC’s technology teams across areas including digital, engineering and worldwide, where these three areas will be merged. The job losses were made in response to a funding shortfall of £150 million (€210 million) as viewers increasingly switch to online viewing. Formal consultation with staff will commence shortly. It is anticipated that the vast majority of jobs will end by the beginning of 2016. The BBC currently has around 18,000 workers so the reduction will represent more than 5 percent of the total workforce.
