Description
Supermarket giant Asda is reported to be cutting jobs from its UK head office in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The precise number of cuts is reported by different sources as between 200 and 300 jobs, with sources also disagreeing over the number of people employed by the company at the Leeds site. The company has embarked on this strategy as part of plans to cut costs by one billion GBP over the next five years. A spokesperson for Asda cited the need to remain competitive and respond to customer behaviour. The timescale for the job losses has not been announced, though the announcement from Asda indicated that consultation with affected employees has already started.
Update 16/03/2016: At the conclusion of formal consultation, a final number of 250 jobs have been abolished at Asda's head office in Leeds. These job cuts are addition to a further 500 jobs that will be cut from retail network of stores (see related factsheet).
