Description
Ericsson, Swedish provider of telecommunications equipment, is to dismiss 332 workers at its Italian sites in 2016, including 140 at its Genoa site.
The company said that the collective dismissals are due to sectoral difficulties in the telecommunications sector.
Trade unions complained that their proposed alternatives to the dismissals were not taken into consideration by the management. They have initiated strikes and demonstrated in Rome, Genoa and Pisa. On 22 June, trade unions and the management met at the Ministry of Economic Development premises, but the company stated that there are no alternatives to dismissals.
Update, 12/09/2016: The management and unions did not reach an agreement within the deadline of the collective dismissal procedure. The company confirmed the job cuts unilaterally while disclosing the intention to seek voluntary exits.
