European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The Swedish Migration Agency has announced plans to cut approximately 1,800 jobs due to the diminishing amount of refugees arriving in Sweden. The exact amount of redundancies will be specified after the Swedish government has finalised the agency's budget for 2017, but 1,800 redundancies is the prognosis based on calculations by the Swedish Migration Agency. The agency hired thousands of new employees throughout Sweden during 2015-2016 in order to handle the many refugees arriving in Sweden. The agency had 4,289 employees in January 2014, 5,103 in January 2015, 7,227 in January 2016 and 8,400 in January 2017. After a steep decrease in the number of refugees arriving in Sweden following new stricter legislation, the agency has decreased its procurement of accommodation for asylum seekers leading to redundancies as previously reported, see e.g. the ERM case Jokarjo, and will now cut 25% of its full time positions in order to adapt to a smaller budget due to lesser amount of work with asylum seekers. Redundancies will be carried out throughout 2017 in order to balance the new budget by 2018.
The ERM has previously reported on the hiring of thousands of employees to work with asylum seekers by for example Malmö Municipality, Stockholm Municipality and Gothenburg Municipality.
Update 01/02/2017The Swedish Migration Agency has announced its first cut backs due to the diminishing amount of refugees arriving in Sweden. Operations will first be scaled back in 'Region Mitt' with a total of 300 positions being made redundant. 60 positions will be cut in Värmlands county, 60 in Gävleborgs county, 55 in Västmanlands county, 50 in Dalarna county, 45 in Örebro county and 30 in Uppsala county.
Additionally, the Swedish Migration Agency will decrease its procurement of accommodation for asylum seekers with a total of 23,500 places during the first half of 2017. The goal is to accommodate 10,000 individuals by May 2017. In total contracts with 183 housing facilities will be discontinued.
