The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The management of the Finnish telecom equipment provider Nokia has announced a reorganisation that will lead to 460 job cuts by the end of 2020. 'Most of the busines and central functions are expected to be impacted. Its implementation should be phased in in 2019 and 2020'. This restructuring affects about one in 10 of Nokia's 4,136 employees in France. These new job cuts will not concern R&D, which has 2,457 employees. In the R&D department, Nokia has hired 500 engineers in 2018 (40 positions are still open beginning 2019) to prepare for future requirements, mainly the 5G technology. Positions will be cut in other departments such as support functions and sales.
This is the third departure plan of a similar magnitude since 2015. One of the recent restructurings, which saw 400 people leave the group, has just been completed. A second, announced in 2017, which initially aimed to cut 567 positions, has been reduced to around 450 people and is due to be completed at the end of 2019.
The job cuts do not concern the three Nokia's subsidiaries: Alcatel Submarine Networks (980 employees), which Nokia wishes to sell; RFS (171 employees) and Bell Labs (227 employees).
Update 11/02/2019: Nokia France has reviewed its 2019-2020 redundancy plan and now plans to cut 408 jobs rather than the 460 planned when the project was announced to the European Works Council. According to the company's inter-union association, these job cuts are divided between two sites: Nozay (353 job cuts) and Lannion (55 job cuts).
